Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp espresso powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • For Salted Caramel Sauce: 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter
  • ½ cup heavy cream, room temperature
  • ¼ tsp sea salt (or to taste)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two round baking pans and line with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, espresso powder, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix the wet ingredients: eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth. Combine with the dry ingredients until just mixed.
  4. Divide batter evenly between prepared pans. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans for about ten minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  5. For the salted caramel sauce: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt sugar without stirring until it turns amber-colored. Add butter and stir until melted. Slowly whisk in cream until smooth; add sea salt to taste.
  6. Once cakes are completely cooled, layer them on a plate with salted caramel sauce in between layers and on top.
