Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two round cake pans and dust with flour.
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and baking soda.
  3. In another bowl, combine sugar and vegetable oil until smooth. Add eggs one at a time; mix well. Then add buttermilk, red food coloring, and vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually incorporate dry ingredients into wet ingredients without over-mixing.
  5. Divide batter between pans and bake for 25–30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  7. For frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until creamy; gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla until fluffy.
  8. Frost cooled cake layers and serve.
