King Cake is a festive delight that captures the spirit of Mardi Gras with its vibrant colors and sweet flavors. This soft, pillowy cake, infused with cinnamon and vanilla, is perfect for celebrations or simply indulging in something special. With a hidden surprise inside and a colorful glaze on top, this King Cake will be the centerpiece of any gathering, bringing joy to all who partake.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp milk or water (adjust based on desired thickness)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk with yeast and let sit until frothy (about 5 minutes). In another bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt.
  2. Add melted butter and eggs into the yeast mixture once frothy. Gradually stir in the flour mixture until dough forms. Knead until smooth (about 6 minutes) and place in a greased bowl covered with plastic wrap.
  3. Allow the dough to rise in a warm area until doubled in size (approximately 1 hour).
  4. Punch down the risen dough and roll it into a rectangle (about an inch thick). Spread softened butter over the surface and sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar.
  5. Roll up the rectangle from one long side into a log shape, pinch seams closed, and form into a circle. Hide a small plastic baby inside if desired.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place shaped cake on parchment-lined baking sheet; let rise again for about 30 minutes before baking for approximately 35 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. Drizzle with glaze made from powdered sugar mixed with water/milk.
