Description

Southern-Style Collard Greens are a comforting and flavorful dish that embodies Southern tradition. Made with tender collard greens simmered in rich chicken broth, these greens are infused with the smoky essence of ham hock, garlic, and onion. Perfect as a side for any meal, they deliver warmth and satisfaction that will have everyone coming back for seconds. Serve them alongside cornbread or fried chicken for a true Southern feast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bunch collard greens (about 1 pound)
  • 1 smoked ham hock
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Thoroughly wash the collard greens to remove grit. Remove tough stems and chop leaves into bite-sized pieces.
  2. In a large pot over medium heat, sauté the chopped onion in 2 tablespoons olive oil until translucent (about 5 minutes). Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  3. Stir in the smoked ham hock and pour in the chicken broth. Bring to a gentle boil.
  4. Add collard greens and red pepper flakes; season with salt and pepper to taste. Reduce heat to low and cover.
  5. Simmer for about 45 minutes to 1 hour until the greens are tender.
