Ingredients
  

Cupcake Batter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
Frosting
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup red food coloring for red frosting
  • 1 cup blue food coloring for blue frosting
  • sprinkles red, white, and blue sprinkles for decoration

Method
 

Make Cupcakes
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Stir in the milk and vanilla extract.
  5. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  7. Divide the batter evenly among the cupcake liners, filling each about 2/3 full.
  8. Bake for 15-18 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow to cool completely before frosting.
Make Frosting
  1. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
  2. Gradually add the powdered sugar, alternating with the heavy cream, until smooth and fluffy.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and mix until combined.
  4. Divide the frosting into three bowls. Color one bowl red, one blue, and leave one white.
  5. Use piping bags to frost the cooled cupcakes with red, white, and blue frosting.
  6. Top with red, white, and blue sprinkles for decoration.

Notes

These cupcakes can be made a day in advance and stored in an airtight container.
