Method
Prepare the Dough
- In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
- Chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
Bake the Cookies
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Allow cookies to cool completely on a wire rack.
Decorate the Cookies
- Divide the royal icing into three bowls and color one red, one blue, and leave one white.
- Use piping bags to decorate the cooled cookies with the colored icing.
- Sprinkle with red, white, and blue sprinkles as desired.
- Let the icing set before serving.
