Ingredients
  

Cookies
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
Decorations
  • 1 cup royal icing divided into three bowls
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
  • 1 tablespoon blue food coloring
  • 1 cup sprinkles red, white, and blue

Method
 

Prepare the Dough
  1. In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  5. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
Bake the Cookies
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  3. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
  5. Allow cookies to cool completely on a wire rack.
Decorate the Cookies
  1. Divide the royal icing into three bowls and color one red, one blue, and leave one white.
  2. Use piping bags to decorate the cooled cookies with the colored icing.
  3. Sprinkle with red, white, and blue sprinkles as desired.
  4. Let the icing set before serving.

Notes

These cookies can be made ahead of time and stored in an airtight container for up to one week.
