Ingredients
  

For the Dough
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour can substitute with whole wheat
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda ensure it's fresh
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1.5 cups buttermilk can substitute with milk and vinegar
Optional Add-ins
  • 1 cup raisins or currants can substitute with dried cranberries
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds optional

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Combine the flour, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Whisk them together until well blended.
  3. Add the buttermilk gradually while stirring with a wooden spoon until the dough comes together.
  4. Knead the dough gently on a floured surface for about 1-2 minutes.
  5. Shape the dough into a round loaf, about 1-2 inches thick, and place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Score a deep cross on top.
  6. Bake in your preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
Serving
  1. Serve warm with butter and jam for an extra treat!
