Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground Lamb or Beef Choose lamb for a traditional shepherd's pie, or beef for a comforting cottage pie.
  • 1 medium Onion Sauté until translucent.
  • 2 medium Carrots Diced small.
  • 1 cup Peas Add bright color.
  • 2 cloves Garlic Minced.
  • 2 tbsp Tomato Paste Provides depth.
  • 1 cup Beef Broth Savory liquid.
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce Adds umami.
  • 1 tsp Thyme Fresh herb.
  • 1 tsp Rosemary Fresh herb.
For the Topping
  • 2 lb Potatoes Yukon Golds or russets.
  • 4 tbsp Butter Adds richness.
  • 1/2 cup Milk or Cream For velvety texture.
  • to taste Salt and Pepper Essential seasonings.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Sauté onions and garlic in a large skillet over medium heat until fragrant and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Brown the ground meat in the skillet, stirring frequently until fully cooked, about 7-10 minutes.
  4. Stir in carrots, peas, and corn, cooking for another 5 minutes.
  5. Season with salt, pepper, and fresh herbs to taste. Let those flavors meld together for about 2 minutes before removing from heat.
Mashed Potatoes
  1. Boil peeled potatoes until fork-tender, around 15-20 minutes. Drain them well and return them to the pot.
  2. Mash the potatoes with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth and fluffy.
Assembly and Baking
  1. Layer the meat mixture in a baking dish, then spread the mashed potatoes evenly on top.
  2. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the top is golden brown and crispy.
