Ingredients
  

Cookie Dough
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
Decorations
  • 1 cup royal icing red, white, and blue
  • 1/2 cup blue sprinkles
  • 1/2 cup red sprinkles

Method
 

Prepare the Cookie Dough
  1. In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
Shape and Bake Cookies
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick.
  3. Use a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
  5. Allow cookies to cool completely on a wire rack.
Decorate Cookies
  1. Once cooled, use royal icing to decorate the cookies in a flag pattern, using blue icing for the stars and red icing for the stripes.
  2. Sprinkle blue and red sprinkles on the appropriate areas for added decoration.
